Discussion for 10/16

For this discussion post, I would like everyone to talk about one's own experience with writing a research paper either during high school or college. Write about the process and steps you took to write your paper and reflect on this. Compare the process to the past readings (1-6) and discuss anything you would have done differently or are glad you did, etc. How do the processes and steps taken for your chosen research paper compare to the infographic process we are taking in this course?

All three prompt questions should be responded to by Thursday at midnight.

Everyone should provide feedback to at least one peer's post.

  1. When i was in high school I had to do a research on how alcoholism affected society?. I started it by creating a thesis which is exactly what I did with my info graphic the I started to look for different articles and information over my topic. At first I have a lot of trouble because I didn't know how to start it or how to know which articles where the right ones to choose. After I choose my articles I have to take the most important things of the article but it was hard because for me almost the whole article was important. I would try to make my research in a way that it goes straight to the point and making sure that it doesn't makes the audience get bored. It was hard for me to make a research just as it is hard to make the info graphic

    1. I also had the same problem on finding articles. To find more articles I went on Articles and Database to Academic Search Complete and JSTOR. I found articles that are very useful that can get you direct information for the infographic.

    2. You follow more or less the same steps that I learned in highschool, I think that your info graphic would be easy if you have all your information from your research.

  2. I recently did research on childhood obesity for one of my classes. First, I remembered what I knew about my topic and wrote information down. Then, I broke down the topic and analyzed piece exactly how I did for my infographic. I researched articles to find my support and evalute my topic to create something out of it.I think Article 6 helps me a lot because writing a research paper, I would think I have to find lots of information and make it sound amazing. After reading Article 6 I realized that I can start by just planning and writing my ideas to develop an main point. The steps I'm using for my research on obesity are the same steps I'm taking for my infographic. It helps me break down more information and figuring out what kind of information can go on my infographic. By using all these steps helps me find my design to create my infographic.

  3. During my senior year in high school my teacher assign us to do a reasearch paper has a final work. My topic was "Impact of teen pregnancy" Like it happens right now with my infographic at first I was very excited because i found a lot of information about my topic but then when i realize all the things that i have to do and the structure that i need to use to create my research i was very confused so I decided to ask my teacher for some feedbak wich i am glad that i did, because he help me a lot because he gave me some advices on how to keep going on the topic and making it understandable. Some of the steps that i follow with my research are similiar with the ones that i am following with my infographic, i started by looking for information, then i choose the articles that better fit with my topic and like in high school i am having some troubles with my thesis!

  4. There was only one time when i was asked to write a research paper and that was on high school last year. The steps that i took to write this essay were simple first tried to learn more about the topic. Then i went ahead and create some questions..questions that some people may have relating to this topic, so that i may have those answers on my research. After that i put everything together to make my draft. Most of the time it was kind of difficult because there was a lot of information and i was to decide whether the information was useful/important. If all the details were good enough to be included or if they are just too much. This class has helped me a lot because the series of steps that we had to take so make an essay or just a simple paragraph were very useful. A couple of days ago we were told to read Article 6 and this article was very inspirational. Some of the sentences in this article really motivated to keep wrtitng/not lose focus. Article six has shown me that if just write our ideas down first..later we can make a simple paragraph sound amazing. As soon as we were told to make an inforgraphic I immediately knew what to do. I just followed the same process we have been making for our writings. Right now i find this very useful..maybe a couple problems come up every now and them, but i stop ,relax, get all my ideas together and start again.

  7. When I was in high school like two years ago I took an art class here in Panam and my professor assigned me to write an art report. The essay consisted in write about one painting and describe it, for example tell what do we see on it. First I though that will be an easy assignment because I didn't have to do many research because almost all the essay was more like an "opinion or thinking" project because I needed to give my opinion or point of view about it. When I was writing my essay it was harder than I though because I was in blank. I had many ideas but at the time to write it down I don't know how to start ; this always happens to me. Now with the articles that I had read in this class I know that it's necessary to write down all my ideas first and then write many drafts as possible. With this useful advice now with my infographic I don't have the same big struggle now it is easier for me.

  8. When I was in high school I usually was never assigned research papers. Usually when I was assigned a research paper I didn't know what to do. Usually all I really did was research the topic a little and then I just made the small information I had seem like a lot of information. For the readings they showed me a lot of new strategies that I didn't know or wasn't showed in High School. I also noticed that the were articles had a little too much information. It was hard to pick what was the best information or most useful information/strategies to use. But now that you are showing us how to do our infographic step by step, I feel more confident about how well I'm doing my research and my infographic.

  9. In high school I had to do a research paper on Medieval Times and I started with my introduction/thesis. From there I went on to do my research once I gathered everything I felt was necessary for my paper I started my first, second, third etc. paragraphs. I would then put everything in like index cards and divide them into what I felt was the first paragraph, the second, etc. Finally my conclusion was the exact same thing as my intro just backwards.

  10. when i was in high school, the only research paper i had was on medieval times and i was lost throughout the entire paper. i think this info-graphic is easier because its something we can create physically instead of just writing research down on paper. After reading Article 6, i understand that my project needs to be well thought out and planned. brainstorming, writing my ideas or even drawing things out can help my project be better. One thing that is similar about the two is the thesis. I've always had trouble with my thesis but i think its getting easier now that my project is slowly coming together.

  11. I was in the IB program when i was in high school, so I know more or less how to do the essay. I would use the same structure that I used to write papers in highschool. First do the thesis with 3 key points, then do 3 body paragraphs explaining with evidence the 3 key pints that were on the thesis, and finally do the conclucion. That works for me and I think it will work for my essay in this class.

  12. In high school I usually did not get assign essays in my classes. There was one time when I had to write a personal essay for scholarships and such. Usually when I write essays I was though to brainstorm all the ideas I had and choose the best one that I liked. Once I got it I started writing my thesis in a way that I was trying to tell the reader what the story was going to be about. Once my thesis is complete I started on my body and let everything flow as I write I hardly ever did a separate sheet with ideas. I just let all of them come in my mind and go with the story. at the end of essays I hardly ever write the same thing as in my intro. My conclusion is my way saying that what you've read was something worth knowing. I never did a research paper not that I know of but I maybe a little confused on how I am suppose to do it with mine as in putting the MLA format into the essay. I have done one MLA format but it wasn't that much. Hopefully with some help of peers I would be able to do it.

  13. In High School, I had to write multiple papers for almost all of my classes. For the majority of them, I wrote out an outline, figured out my thesis, and then found articles to support my topic or position and winged it. I have a habit of writing my paper and then composing my thesis instead of the other way around. My introductions were normal, as well as my body. Once I can get started, the rest kinda flows. My conclusions were similar to my Intro's, but with a few different things. Most of the time it would turn out pretty good. Most of them were MLA format so I'm familiar with it, however I remember one time I had to write it APA style. That was a mess! I am not used to that style at all. What I would have changed is how I approached my essays. For me, creating an infographic is different from writing a paper. I have to choose which information has the greatest value and then figure out how I can present it to my audience in way that doesn't sound like a lecture, unlike essays.
